Test Driving Indulge - fine dining at home without the fuss

diningroomHere's what the meal for two kit looked like on arrival. All very clearly marked up.

What do we need to know about Indulge?

This new delivery-only company is based up in Walthamstow and was founded by chef Andy Bowler. Bowler has an impressive background having trained under both Michel Roux Jr and Simon Rogan (working at both Roganic and Fera at Claridge's) with his most recent job - pre-Lockdown - at Gordon Ramsay's Petrus in Knightsbridge.

So he's branched out on his own?

He has, offering a weekly changing fine dining meal kit delivery. Think modern British cooking using French classical techniques.

Is it fancy stuff?

The end result certainly looks gorgeous, but Andy maintains they've done all the hard work, so while you'll need an oven, a hob, a couple of saucepans and a frying pan, that is it. Everything that does need to go in the oven, goes in at the same temperature, so fire it up and away you go.

Here's what we had (and what we had to do to it):

diningroomMalt buns with roasted yeast butter - pop these babies into the oven for a few minutes and slather with the amazingly umami-rich butter.

diningroomHeritage carrots with lovage mayo, buttermilk and crumbled walnuts - this was an assembly job with no cooking required - just a steady hand with the piping bag. Such a fan of lovage and this mayo was so good, we were pretty sparing with it, so we could save it for use later in the weekend.

diningroomLamb shoulder with crispy onions, caramelised onion puree, salsify and leeks. All that was needed here was to warm up the meat and veg and then assemble it. We'll admit to messing up the plating of the lamb on one dish - obviously that's not the one we photographed. Gorgeous dish and one that clearly took someone else hours to make.

diningroomAlmond cake with clementine gel and ginger jelly - more piping fun (you could turn this into part of the evening and compete to see who's finished dish looks the best).

diningroomMilk chocolate and hazelnut truffles (£2.50 supplement).

What about drink?

Andy's teamed up with local wine merchants Forest Wines who offer a suggested wine pairing with each week's menu.

Overall thoughts:

We hear that Indulge already has a massively loyal following in North East London with loads of repeat custom and it's easy to see why. Menus change every week, so you'd never get bored - and there's very clear instruction given, along with a photo sheet so you can see exactly what the finished dishes should look like. As their delivery range expands, you should seriously consider giving them a try.
