Tell us about The Greyhound
We recently visited Suffolk to check out its most famous gastropub, The Unruly Pig. But not far at all from there, in a little village called Pettistree, there happens to be another excellent pub that's just as worth a visit if you're in the area.
The Greyhound Inn is on the Top 50 UK Gastropubs extended list (at 66). It's run by four London friends who decided to open a pub in the countryside and who took over this small countryside inn. Leading the kitchen is chef Adam Spicer who has also featured on MasterChef The Professionals, getting to the final 16 back in 2019. Here, he's in charge of a seasonal menu inspired by their "rural surrounds".
Where is it?
Pettistree is deep inside Suffolk, halfway between Ufford and Wickham Market. Being honest, it's easiest to get here by car, and is about a 2.5 hour journey from London. Really, it's something to put on the itinerary next time you're in Suffolk, and it's pretty handy if you're staying in and around Aldeburgh.
What's on the menu?
We were struck from the outset that here is a very, very good menu and just the kind of thing we like to see - elevated, interesting pub food using local produce. Ultimately it was full of things we wanted to order. We often talk about a menu "reading well" and this is the case here - you'll find lots to choose from. The menu changes often and the below was from a few weeks back - but it does give a good sense of the food. With that in mind - here's a taste:
That's just scratching the surface of the menu, mind. We'd travel back again to try their devilled eggs and anchovies or their spam fritter with Suffolk autumn truffle. Plus there's a dessert of fig leaf set cream on the menu right now which sounds incredible.
As far as drinks go, we were driving (and it was lunch) so we went light. But if someone is taking you there (or you're going by taxi), the cocktails list seems decent and there's a very interesting wine list too. The locals seem - how shall we put this - like they can definitely afford a pretty decent bottle of wine and there's plenty on the strong European wine list to suit that need.
Overall thoughts
We hadn't been aware of this pub before our visit but it's now firmly on our list of strong recommendations to visit if you're in Suffolk. A lovely grade II listed building, friendly welcoming staff and a fantastic menu full of dishes we'd happily eat all over again right now make this an easy recommendation.
