Test Driving The Goose Box from 1 Lombard Street

AsparagusEverything in the box.

What can you tell us about the Goose Box?

Goose Box isn't actually about geese at all. It comes from the people behind 1 Lombard Street and is designed as a complete meal for two. Part recipe box, part DIY kit and drinks selection, it has everything you need for dinner.

And why that name?

To be honest, we were wondering that ourselves. It turns out that it came from the logo for Soren Jessen's restaurant group (which runs 1 Lombard Street and Etke in the Bloomberg Arcade), That features a goose - "associated with gourmet, gastro, fun, indulgence" and so - Goose Box.

So what's in the box?

It will change from time to time - but our box had a cocktail, asparagus and potted shrimp starter, steak and salad main and truffles and shortbread for dessert - all for two people. Full instructions are provided with the box with various options for the steak - fried or barbecued - and how to achieve the just-right done-ness.

Here's how it all came out.

AsparagusFirst up was the cocktail. This was an Oolong vodka & blueberry iced tea. Much as we love a negroni, we feel they've been done to death a bit of late, so a vodka-based cocktail was just the trick. This contains muddled blueberries mixed in and had a strong kick to it.

AsparagusThe first course - Wye Valley asparagus & potted brown shrimp, dressed with herbs and chilli flakes. A simple dish, and an excellent combination. We love brown shrimp any day, so this was a winner.

AsparagusWe went down the route of barbecuing the enormous steak on our very handy Lotus Grill

AsparagusGlenarm beef porterhouse steak with mixed leaf salad, new season garlic, crisp shallots and radishes

AsparagusThe salad mixes radishes and their leaves in with the lettuce and added Nobis dressing and crispy shallots. This was finished off with micro herbs. The whole combination was outstanding. And so pretty!

AsparagusAnd finally, a simple dessert of chocolate truffle and shortbread. A welcomingly light finish.

What about the wine?

The wine is personally chosen by 1 Lombard Street owner (and the person who's also behind Etke in Bloomberg Arcade). It's an extra £30 on top for the two bottles of wine, which seemed like pretty good value to us. The paired wines were a Grillo Grillo, Vendemia 2018 for the starter and a Vignobles Gonnet Cotes du Rhone 2017 with the steak.

Overall thoughts?

We were very impressed with the Goose Box. It brought together a particularly interesting meal with simple instructions on creating something quite special for yourselves at home. The box is £80 without wine (and with cocktail) - but we think the £110 with two full bottles of wine is the one to go for. You could push the boat out still further and opt for the £130 box with wines chosen especially by owner Soren Jessen. It's an entire night out (but in, of course).
