Tell us a bit about Florattica.
This is the new rooftop restaurant and bar on the top of the Canopy City Hotel. You'll find it up on the 11th floor (there's a dedicated lift to it as well as its own entrance) and it's only a minute from Aldgate tube and a few minutes walk from Liverpool Street station. The name refers to the extraordinary-looking floral installations inside the bar which were, we're told, inspired by the silk-woven floral patterns created by the French Huguenots who settled in this part of town in the 17th century.
If it's on the rooftop then the views are good, right?
The views are really good. Not only do you have a sweeping 180-degree vista across the city, over to the Gherkin and the Cheesegrater, but you also have a very clear view through all the skyscrapers to St Paul's - it's the best of old and new London.
Where should we sit?
The terrace is obviously the place to be if the weather's good. That's split into a range of tables for two and four with larger tables for groups. If you can get it, the table on the far left-hand side, as you head out to the terrace, has a particularly good view across the city. And the area to the far right is probably best for larger groups.
What do we do if the weather isn't great?
The dramatic interior means it's no hardship being indoors and, given that there are floor-to-ceiling windows along one side of the restaurant and bar. So you won't miss out on the view. But the terrace can also be heated, so that's a bonus.
What's on the menu?
For brunch, there's a set menu and for the City (let alone London) it's frankly a bit of a steal. Three courses come in at £35 which compares very well with other brunches in town.
Everyone gets a selection of Sardinian pane carasau and Nocellara olives with basil pesto to start:
Then there's a choice of three appetisers and three mains with one vegetarian option in each section. Here's what we had to give you a taste:
It's weekend brunch, so presumably, we should be trying the cocktails?
There's a short, but considered, cocktail offering, along with a good wine list with plenty of rosé options for your moment in the sunshine. The wine list takes in both new and old world options with a decent selection by the glass. As this is the City there's a large selection of Champagne and pricier choices such as a bottle of 2012 Cristal for £700 and a 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon from Chateau Buena Vista in the Napa Valley for £160. But there's also plenty to choose from in the sub-£50 part of the list too.
We tried two of the twelve cocktails on offer, all of which come in the £16-£18 bracket. A Daisyrac - their take on a Sazerac - comes infused with applewood smoke and features chamomile syrup and chocolate bitters.
Summing it all up
While we can imagine the scene at Florattica hotting up come sundown (there's a resident DJ in the evenings from Thursday to Saturday), it's a lovely laid-back spot for weekend brunch. There's a good, vibey playlist and it seemed to be equally a place to come for a daytime date as it was a spot to catch up with friends. The staff are super friendly and it's decently priced for this part of town. What's not to like?
