An instant paradox: the cold interior decor and a very warm welcome at Monday’s opening of the frozen food pop-up restaurant N-Ice was a somewhat bizarre summertime journey into an ambient winter wonderland.
For the week-long event, Michelin-starred chefs Simon Rimmer (BBC’s Something for the Weekend) and Atul Kochhar (BBC’s Great British Menu) have been drafted in by the British Frozen Food Federation to have some of their signature dishes replicated using only frozen ingredients.
The idea is to disprove the notion that frozen food lacks taste and goodness. Our smoked salmon starter with pickled ginger crème fraiche and citrus fruits was pretty fabulous. This was followed by a flavoursome grilled Mahi Mahi - a tropical white fish - complemented with tender sautéed baby
squid, white beans and a ginger butter sauce. The dinner ended on a sweet note with vanilla bean panna cotta in a puddle of strawberry consommé.
Located in London’s Vincent Square, N-Ice will be open until 12 August between 12-2pm. Guests will be invited to make a minimum donation of £10 for a three course meal and £10 for a bottle of wine. For reservations contact 020 7802 8391 or restaurant@westking.ac.uk
