It's not usually advisable to accept an invitation to any event on a Monday night which involves tasting 30 different wines, but when Hot Dinners found out we'd be helping put together the final drinks list for a regular drinks-pairing event at Trishna, we couldn't turn down the invitation.
Not Your Average Curry Night was dreamt up to launch Trishna's new Head Chef on to the London scene. North London boy Karam Sethi has honed his skills working at Bukhara in Delhi (which has previously made it into the top 20 in the San Pellegrino World's Best Restaurants list) and Trishna in Mumbai.
Karam worked up a 10 course tasting menu for us, with a shortlist of accompanying drinks drawn up by Trisha's Head Sommelier Zsolt Kismodi (who used to be at Galvin Bistro de Luxe) and Wine Chap. Our gathering of foodies (including yours truly) had then to help choose the final wine selection.
Highlights of the evening food-wise included a Hariyali Bream, Gurnard Tikka and a fantastically rich Dorset Brown Crab practically floating in butter and garlic. On the wine front, a Chenin Blanc from the Sula Vineyards in India raised a few eyebrows (in a good way) and we were pretty taken with an Austrian wine with the less-than-mellifluous name of Rotgipfler.
The first monthly Not Your Average Curry night will be held on the 20th March, and each evening will be hosted by Tom Harrow from Wine Chap. To reserve a table contact Trishna on 0207 935 5624. And if you don't like the wine selection, you can blame that on us.
