What: Tortilleria El Pastor
In a nutshell: Tortilla factory and taco bar
Summing it all up: The team behind Borough's El Pastor are opening their own tortilla factor and taco bar down the road beside Maltby Street Market
The low-down
If you're the kind of person who likes seeing your noodles made before eat your ramen (Tonkotsu) or pasta before you have your cacio e pepe (Padella) then make a note in your diary for late March when Tortilleria El Pastor is due to open down by Maltby Street Market.
Linked to, and just down the road from the taqueria El Pastor launched by Sam and James Hart and Crispin Somerville, this tortilleria, or tortilla factory, will make fresh tortillas from scratch every day. You can buy them to take away and there'll also be a taco bar to eat in too. They've bought in a special machine from Mexico to make the tortillas and they'll only be using Mexican heirloom corn.
We quite fancy the idea of buying a whole load of tortillas to take home along with some Mexican beer and then hunkering down at the bar, before we go, to try their signature Al Pastor or maybe the mushroom taco with caramelised onion and melted Oaxaca cheese. Unlike the original taqueria you'll be able to try sopes here too - thick corn mini maize cakes piled high with toppings.
If all that works up a thirst, then maybe you'll need a shot of El Pastor’s first batch of their own mezcal, made in partnership with Mexico’s La Clandestina mezcaleria.
When it opens, Tortilleria El Pastor will seat 26 in total - with 20 at tables and 6 at a high taco bar.
