Last week, Hot Dinners was invited to the launch of the new GSK Contemporary – Aware: Art Fashion Identity exhibition at the Royal Academy. What has this to do with food, you might ask? Well, for the second year, Sketch are providing a pop-up café to coincide with the event. And so, Hot Dinners was able to play its favourite game of chase the canapé, under the pretence of taking in some culture.
The exhibition itself, which focuses on “how artists and a number of designers examine clothing as a mechanism to communicate and reveal elements of our identity” was fascinating, with a number of odd things on display including a dissolving dress and another one made from dress pins. However, Hot Dinners has no shame in admitting to being able to take in only a certain amount of art before the need for food sets in - so we're really not kidding about being led around by the canapés. Various Sketch-provided concoctions, involving foie gras, duck, tuna and the like, were intercepted at every opportunity and were a good sign of what the proper pop-up is promising.
We also took the chance to have a gander at what will be on offer in the main café, which features a number of dishes from Pierre Gagnaire. His menu is split into comfort food, patisseries, viennoiserie and cakes, drinks, and champagne and wines. Highlights include Fashion Identity Salad and Soup Macedo - pumpkin soup with popcorn. For those who aren't worried about their figures - there's caramel eclairs and cheesecake tartlets.
The exhibition runs until 30th January, so you plenty of time to try out Gagnaire’s creations and take a wander through the collection too. Find out more.
