Update: The news today (5 October 2010) is that while the Savoy itself will open on Sunday10 October - the restaurants' openings have now been set for 29 November 2010.
After what seems like the longest renovation in history (although it’s actually been less than three years) we finally hear that there’s a reopening date for The Savoy. Not a pencilled-in, hopeful kind of date, but a proper write it in ink opening scheduled for the 10th October 2010.
And with the reopening of the hotel, that means a concrete date for the reopening of the Savoy Grill, River Restaurant (seen right) and The American Bar, all of which have been either renovated or extensively remodelled. The hotel will also welcome another drinking hole – The Beaufort Bar, an Art Deco bar offering cocktails and cabaret and a diminutive teashop Savoy Tea.
Taking over the kitchens at The Savoy Grill for Gordon Ramsay Holdings will be Chef Patron, Stuart Gillies and Head Chef,Andy Cook. Gillies gave trade title Caterer Search an idea of what to expect on the menu earlier this year, saying: The aim is to go back to what the Savoy Grill used to be and there will be a large menu of dishes with a lot of theatre around them. It’s all about the room and creating a great atmosphere,’ he said. Clearly he’s targeting the business market as he added; ‘These days people don’t have time for a four-course lunch and those who want can be in and out of there in an hour.’
At the River Restaurant, which as the name suggests has stunning views over the Thames, will be Ryan Murphy who comes to London from his position as Head Chef at the Ronnums Herrgård hotel in Sweden. Before the closure it was only open for breakfast and Sunday brunch, but under Ryan, who'll be serving a modern French menu, it will once again open for lunch and dinner.
