It was a sad day for Islington foodies when Canonbury Butchers on St Paul's Road closed down. But the good news is that it hasn't become another estate agents but has switched from meat to fish. Prawn on the Lawn which opens on 23rd August will be a fishmonger and seafood bar. There's a wet fish counter as well as a dining counter with just eight covers.
They've only got a licence for cold food, so expect the usual fruits de mer platters (£25) and whole crab as well as some more tapas-style dishes like scallops ceviche (£9) and their signature dish - the prawn on the lawn which is toasted soda bread with avocado and prawns (£6).
The man behind the venture is Rick Toogood who used to work for Fishworks. It's his first solo place, "I thought it was time to do my own thing," he told Hot Dinners.
On the drinks front, Toogood apparently has a "great wine supplier. We'll have plenty of half bottles and I've got a nice sparkling Albarino, as far as I'm aware I'm the first person in London to get it."
Prawn on the Lawn opens at 220 St Paul's Road, London N1 2LL on Friday 23 August. The fishmongers is open 9am to 7pm and the seafood bar from 12pm to 9pm Tues-Wed and then 12-10pm Thursday to Saturday. It will be closed on Sunday and Mondays.
