(Update - Karpo is now opening on February 1)
Kings Cross is getting an early Christmas present in the form of a new all-day diner called Karpo. Just opposite the entrance to the station on Euston Road, the restaurant, which opens in December, sounds like a useful new addition to the area.
The head chef will be American-born Daniel Taylor - who's worked with both Rowley Leigh (Le Café Anglais) and Jeremy Lee (The Blueprint Café) and was most recently at the Fay Maschler-related cafe Bond & Brook at Fenwicks department store.
Taylor's American heritage means there'll be several US-inspired dishes on the menu like shrimp and grits, reuben on rye and southern fried quail with celeriac slaw. As Karpo is open from 7am there will also be an extensive breakfast/brunch menu with kedgeree and salt beef hash and fried eggs on offer. He's started planting his own urban garden on the roof of an adjacent building and is currently growing potatoes, kale, artichokes, salad leaves and fruit trees for use in the restaurant.
On the wine front - the list will run to around 100 bottles - most of which will be available by the glass or small pot.
There'll be 140 covers, including a private dining area and a lounge bar on the lower level.
Karpo will be open daily from 7am until 11pm at 23 Euston Road, London NW1. The reservations number will be 020-7843 2221.
