London Wine Week planned for June by organisers of London Cocktail week

londonwineweekConnoisseurs, wine lovers and novices alike are being invited to take part in London Wine Week, the capital’s first dedicated week-long consumer event. The seven day celebration of London's restaurants, bars and wine merchants will run for a week from the 2nd til the 8th of June 2014.

The initiative has been launched by The London Wine Fair in partnership with the team behind London Cocktail Week who plan to bring their huge success in boosting the profile of spirits brands and cocktail bars to the world of wine bars and restaurants.

Similar to Cocktail Week, the event will offer wristband holders special offers throughout the course of the week including premium wines by the glass for just £5 at a selection of venues throughout the capital.

Wristbands for London Wine Week went on sale this week and cost £10, available on their website here. You can pick up these up from one of three hubs spread across central London.

Hot Dinners caught up with festival director of London Wine Week Emma Murphy to find out why wine lovers all over the capital are in for a very exciting week.

How did the idea for London Wine Week come about?

The idea came about last year when wine industry figure Chris Orr joined the parent company of London Cocktail Week. He saw the potential for the successful format of the London Cocktail Week festival to translate to the world of wine, and the wheels were set in motion for the first ever London Wine Week.

Which venues/sponsors do you have on board?

We are thrilled to have Harvey Nichols, Riedel, Wines from Rioja and WSET as our headline partners, each bringing a unique element to the festival as a whole. We have a really varied and fantastic selection of venues involved, ranging from foodie greats such as Gordon Ramsay Group, Hawksmoor, Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen and Barbecoa, and D&D Group - new wine bar openings including 28-50 and Sager & Wilde plus some of London’s old favourites like Berry Bros & Rudd and Kettners.

Is wine culture set to surpass cocktail culture in popularity?

The last year has really felt as if wine has begun to take centre stage in the London hospitality scene; in recent years all excitement has been over food and cocktail related openings and events but during 2013 we saw a number of fantastic wine bars open and some really innovative wine focused events spring up – events such as the Wine Car Boot and Street Vin at Street Feast have broken down the barriers and brought wine to a younger audience, something that we are hoping to take even further with the launch of London Wine Week.

Finally, what are some of your favourite places to drink wine at the moment?

Sager & Wilde and Compagnie des vins surnaturels (CVS) would be my top picks of the moment.

In addition to the growing number outlets taking part in London Wine Week, there are also a number of fringe events scheduled to take place in and around this busy period.

Already scheduled is a ticketed tasting event hosted at Peter Gordon's restaurant The Providores and Tapa Room on the Monday (2nd June). Participants will be given the opportunity to try around 85% of the extensive winelist, the largest New Zealand wine list in Europe whilst tasting Peter Gordon's fusion cuisine canapés.

Hot Dinners has also heard rumours of a pop-up wine bar near Leicester Square serving nothing but Chardonnay and yet another new wine bar in East London set to open its doors in in time for the event. Stay tuned to us for more updates - we plan to keep readers updated with details of these as they are confirmed.
