London Adam & Eve gastropub serves up pizza saltier than the sea

adamandeveWould you Adam and Eve it? (sorry - we honestly couldn't help ourselves) A pizza spot, the Adam & Eve gastropub in North London has hit the headlines for selling a pizza saltier than seawater.

The poor old pizzeria in Mill Hill was told two days ago that they'd been mentioned by name in a survey by the Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) and the Association of London Environmental Health Managers to push National Salt Awareness Week. But they probably hadn't counted on the story being picked up the BBC and then going global. The dish in question was a pepperoni pizza which had 2.73g (0.09oz) of salt per 100g (3.52oz), against the Atlantic Ocean which has 2.5g of salt per 100g.

Staying calm in the face of such publicity a spokesperson for Adam & Eve told the BBC: "As a small independent outlet it's very helpful and rare to have direction on such aspects of nutrition...we have already changed our recipes and suppliers to lower the amount of salt in four pizzas to within recommended levels."

To be fair to the Mill Hill spot they weren't alone. Other London pizzerias included in the survey's Top 5 salt offenders of 199 take-out and supermarket pizzas tested  included in second place La Vera Italia Pepperoni Pizza (Wandsworth) - 2.43g salt per 100g and at fifth position Il Mascal Zone Pepperoni Pizza (Barnet) - 2.08g salt per 100g. That said, the survey only tested 81 pizzas in total from 17 London boroughs so it wasn't exactly the most rigorous or exhaustive of tests. But it does make for a hell of a news headline.
