One of the big stories today was the decision by Gordon Ramsay to close his pub in Chiswick, The Devonshire. However, a quick Google on the subject reveals this may looks like a story almost 18 months in the making.
Back at the beginning of 2009, deep in the heart of the recession, the Evening Standard published an article revealing that Ramsay had already earmarked The Devonshire as one of two venues he was planning on selling. Certainly the lukewarm reviews it received on opening can't have helped matters much. Fay Maschler described her Barnsley chop there as 'so whiffy as to be completely offputting'.
At the time, GRH protested that the appearance of the Chiswick pub on a property site was down to 'an administrative error'. Now, according to a spokesperson for Gordon Ramsay, the pub was being sold as it apparently 'failed to meet expectations'.
