Fornetto pizza al tranchio is now open on Charing Cross Road

Looks like there's a pizza war hotting up on Charing Cross Road. At one end of the road you have newly-opened NY Fold from American pizza champion Bruno DiFabio, and now there's Fornetto setting out its stall for Italian pizza.

This latest London pizzeria opened just a week ago and is a pizza al tranchio kinda place - which is to say it serves up pizza by the slice. It's a labour of love by Alessio Chong Zheng Dong who took an apprenticeship with Roman pizza master Angelo Iezzi, currently presidente dell'API Associazione Pizzerie Italiane, which sounds pretty proper.

Fornetto's dough is allowed a long fermentation over 72 hours which they say results in "a highly digestible and feather light pizza." On that note, they're serving up a wide range of pizza and Italian dishes as well as plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. It's mainly takeaway, but there are stools and a counter along one wall if you want to scoff sitting down.

Fornetto is now open at 21 Charing Cross Road, London WC2H 0ET. Keep up with their news on Twitter @fornettopizza
