What: Chai Thali
In a nutshell: All day Indian street food in Camden
Summing it all up: With 150 covers, this sizeable new restaurant and bar will be dishing out street food from the subcontinent, plus frozen kulfi and carrot halwa, turmeric lattes and an array of cocktails with an Indian twist.
The low-down
Chai Thali has landed in Camden, bringing with it a hefty menu of street food, snacks and desserts inspired by the subcontinent, from Old Delhi and Mumbai through to the rich curries of southern Kerala.
Early birds will be able to try scrambled eggs given an Indian twist by way of Masala spices, served with hot, buttery brioche, while later visitors can tuck into dishes like Dhaaba Murg chicken curry, inspired by the roadside restaurant dhabas of Punjab. There’ll also be Lamb Ki Chaampe chops cooked in a tandoor oven and served with kachumber, a traditional vinegary side salad. For dessert, there's frozen kulfi, and carrot halwa topped with ice-cream and pistachio.
Lunch time will have a separate ‘on the go’ menu - think mini thalis, paratha rolls with paneer or chana fillings, plus mince lamb burgers.
There's Indian-style cocktails as well, like their Chali Thali Mary, a spicy Bloody Mary, or the Star Chatini, their interpretation of a martini. Hot chai, as is to be expected from the venue's name, will make an appearance, as does everyone’s new favourite beverage, the turmeric latte.
