Canteen launches 1950s style transport cafe pop-up

Canteen launches 1950s style transport cafe pop-upAlready a dab hand at pop ups, having recently completed a long residency in Covent Garden (followed by a permanent place there), Canteen are now producing the ultimate canteen, a transport cafe in the heart of London.

The pop-up is part of the London Design Festival and will be setting up shop in Design Junction on New Oxford Street (along with another pop-up The Danish Bar).

Canteen's pop-up will hark back to TFL's canteens with plenty of huge pics of classic photos from TFL's archive.  The restaurant will be decorated with Underground wall tiles and seats will be covered in the same material seen on 1930s routemasters.

The food itself will be a combination of Canteen's usual fare and food inspired by the 1950s Transport for London cookbook. So there will be Scotch eggs and a Welsh rarebit toasted sandwich with chutney as well a traditional pie & mash or soup & soda bread. There will be a British Cheeseboard and they'll be serving afternoon tea with cakes and pastries too.

There will also be a few design-specific events while the pop-up is running, like tea with Sebastian Conran and more to be announced.

The Canteen Transport for London Cafe is open from 19th - 23th September at Design Junction on New Oxford Street
