Britain's first National Waiters Day will put waiters in the spotlight

waitersdayWith so much focus on chefs, workers in the waiting industry are not always given the recognition they deserve. In light of this comes the brainchild of Fred Sirieix, General Manager of Michelin-starred Galvin at Windows, “National Waiter’s Day”. The celebration, which is the first of its kind, will be held on 23rd June 2013, and events will take place in London and throughout the UK.

With a helping hand from Anne Pierce, Chief Executive of the Springboard Charity, Fred is planning to host an annual celebration dedicated to the thousands of waiters, waitresses, and front of house staff, recognising the difference they make to the British dining experience.

“National Waiter’s Day will feature a programme of events including a gruelling Waiters Race. Waiters and waitresses will be tasked with running with a fully-laden tray through an outdoor course in London,” Sirieix told Hot Dinners. Other events could potentially see celebrities revisiting their roots, working as waiters and waitresses in the restaurants where they worked before entering the world of stardom.

Pledges of support for the event are already flooding in, from The Prince’s Trust, The British Hospitality Association and Visit Britain, as well as catering giants, including Michel Roux Jr, Chris Galvin and Danny Meyer.
