Blumenthal at the Mandarin Oriental exclusive and more...

Heston’s London-bound in as Foliage closes

As first reported by Hot Dinners back in April, Heston Blumenthal officially confirmed this week that he'll be opening a restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge. A spokesperson for the hotel told Hot Dinners that as a result, ‘Foliage, The Park and the Terrace will close in the second quarter of 2010 in order that we can begin to develop a new restaurant and kitchen design for the recently announced Heston Blumenthal restaurant, which will open in autumn 2010.’

As for why they picked Heston, they told us: ‘We continually need to evolve our dining concepts to the next level. Working with Heston Blumenthal on this exciting project is the perfect opportunity to ensure our culinary offering remains true to Mandarin Oriental’s stipulations for excellence and attention to detail, while retaining a strong sense of place.’

What we do know about the restaurant is that it will seat 140 and the menu will ‘feature [Heston's] inimitable style of culinary alchemy’. It will be designed by Adam Tihany – who’s been responsible for the look of New York restaurants Daniel and Per Se, and the kitchen will be headed up by Ashley Palmer Watts who’s been Group Executive Chef at the Fat Duck for the past nine years.

Heston has recently dropped the á la carte menu at The Fat Duck, so he's certainly in an experimental mood at the moment.  We'll let you know as soon as we hear anything about the planned menu.
