Hard on the heels of Rita's Dining which has taken over their bar to become one of the hottest spots in East London, Birthdays in Dalston has spawned another local restaurant that's already creating a storm. White Rabbit opened a month ago on Bradbury Street. "We've had a very warm reception from the public and our neighbours alike," chef Danny Cheetham told Hot Dinners. "It seems people like what we do. Thank God!"
"It's still a work in progress as we are still finishing some cosmetic touches in the main space and installing the wood burning oven in the kitchen. Exciting times.
At the moment they're open from 6.00pm - 12.00am Thursday to Saturday and 12.00pm - 6.00pm on Sunday with plans to open full time in the next two weeks for lunch and dinner service as well as brunch on the weekends.
Menus change every week according to what seasonal produce they get hold of. "With our food we are trying to give our customers a menu that reflects the area, as well as the current food scene," says Danny. "We believe that we are producing high end food at a price that suits our surroundings and the broad range of people that live here."
In practice that means plenty of sharing dishes - in size they range between a starter and main course and are surrounded by snacks, nibbles and charcuterie. A recent menu ranged from pork scratchings (£2.50) and Roll Mops with Preserved Lemon and piccallilli (£4) to Rabbit Croquettes with Mâche Emulsion (£6) and Old Spot Rib, Boston Beans and Coleslaw (£14). Desserts included Baked Salted Caramel, Carrot Paper, Seasonal Berries (£4.50) and a cheese platter for £14. A glass of wine starts at £3.80 and cocktails are £7.
"We are making our own bread and our own butter in house, smoking, curing, pickling and brining the hell out of everything as well as giving our carefully sourced produce the love and attention that it deserves."
