If the classic Christmas feast of turkey and roast veg leaves you cold, then we have a hot contender for a better festive offering for you in London this Christmas. Over in the City, Straits Kitchen at the Pan Pacific London is planning a luxurious Christmas Day lunch and dinner that really spices things up.
Head Chef Nick Yung has created two celebratory festive menus for the day that take influence from the flavours of Singapore, Malaysia and China.
For a family-focused Christmas Day lunch (£195 per person) there's a five-course menu that begins with a glass of Champagne before treats like Hibiscus corn-fed chicken with five spices, beancurd roll and yuzu champagne sauce and a festive trio of desserts; Sichuan caramel mousse, Passion fruit posset with kiwi papaya compote and Kalingo ice cream. Father Christmas we hear is due to make a visit and there will also be magicians touring the restaurant.
In the evening things switch to a four-course dinner offering (£130 per person) that begins with a hot and sour lobster shot and a snow crab tartare with crispy shiso leaf before a main of A5 Japanese beef Wagyu and a baked alaska for dessert.
For both the Christmas Day lunch and dinner there's also a children's menu and vegetarian menu on offer too.
For drinks there's going to be a special pairing courtesy of Straits Kitchen Head Sommelier Francois Bertrand who'll be making full use of London’s largest Chinese wine selection including a 2018 Kanaan Winery Ningxia Riesling from Ningxia, rarely seen on UK lists.
It all sounds a lot more interesting (and way less stressful) than cooking a big old turkey yourself.
