November is often one of the busiest months of the year for new openings and this year is no exception. We see the launch of two Thai food big hitters, a legendary pie maker returns and yes, Jason Atherton is at it again.
AngloThai
Marylebone - 22-24 Seymour Place, London W1H 7NL
This one has been a long time coming but AngloThai are finally opening their own place this month. After years operating as supperclubs and residencies, their new Marylebone restaurant will continue the mix of British produce and Thai recipes. John Chantarasak will be in charge of the kitchen while Desiree Chantarasak will be managing the wine side of things, which has always been a big part of the offering. Their coconut ash crackers (pictured) will make an appearance, this time with Brixham crab and Exmoor caviar, and apparently they'll even be pressing their own coconut cream on site. This one will definitely be worth the wait.
Opening: 11 November 2024
Long Chim
Soho - Hovarda, Ground Floor, 36–40 Rupert St, London W1D 6DW
We're actually getting two great new Thai restaurants this month although this second one is actually a long-term residency inside Hovarda (precisely how long-term is yet to be revealed). It sees Australian chef David Thompson, best known for one of London's best Thai restaurants Nahm, returning to London. His menu here will be influenced by the Bangkok food scene, and to run things, he's bringing over his head chef from Michelin-starred Aksorn in Bangkok. Even at this stage, the exact menu is being kept under wraps, but Instagram photos have been giving us an idea of what to expect.
Opening: 12 November 2024
Row on 5
Mayfair - 5 Savile Row, London W1S 3PB
London's busiest restaurateur is back in the new openings guide once more this month. Row on 5 is his fourth new restaurant in a matter of months (even though Mary's was something of a relaunch). So far, he's had a pretty good hit rate and this latest opening is the most interesting yet. Opening on Savile Row, it's a much more high-end affair than his other places and sees him teaming up with ex-Ritz head chef Spencer Metzger. Expect this to be his new flagship restaurant, led by a 15-course tasting menu that's served across three different rooms (sometimes referred to as a "promenade" presentation).
This almost certainly has Atherton gunning for a Michelin star and given that the Dubai equivalent already has two stars, we think it's a good bet to get one quickly.
Opening: 23 November 2024
The Georgian
Knightsbridge - 4th Floor, Harrods, 87-135 Brompton Road, London SW1X 7XL
Although the restaurant has stealthily opened in October, November is the big official relaunch for The Georgian restaurant at Harrods. Like many of Harrods dining areas recently, it's had a big design refresh but they've also brought in the big guns for the evening menu. Pie king Calum Franklin is back in London, and his pies (and a beef Wellington) are front and centre in the menu. Pride of place is the signature Georgian Pie, which is filled with slow-cooked shoulder of British lamb and served with ratatouille, crispy anchovy tempura and sweetbreads. It's not cheap, with that pie coming in at £90 for two but there is the chef's signature pate en croute and other pies at a slightly more affordable level.
Opening: 4 November 2024
Santo Remedio
Marylebone - 13-14 Thayer St, London W1U 3JR
London's Mexican food scene has come on in leaps and bounds in the last few years and partly responsible for kicking that off is Santo Remedio which showed Londoners just how great authentic Mexican cuisine can be. Now the pair behind it are back with their third restaurant, this time billed as a "Casona & Cantina". Their classic dishes will be available but they're also adding more regional specialities to the menu, along with their drinks focus on tequila and mezcal. This latest opening also adds a private dining room to the mix.
Opening: 7 November 2024
The Mayfair Chippy
Knightsbridge - 138 Brompton Rd, London SW3 1HY
Still keeping the Mayfair moniker, this popular fish and chip shop is opening a second location in Knightbridge. You can expect the usual standards of fried or grilled fish with proper chip shop chips but they'll have a few new things on offer. First is the gin bar (which will be a Bloody Mary bar in the morning) and they'll also be doing breakfasts for the first time. That'll feature a Fishermen's breakfast which adds a cod sausage to the mix. We can see this doing good business from the tourists flocking to Harrods who want to experience a proper chippy.
Opening: 11 November 2024
Artusi Soho
Soho - 6 Walker's Ct, Soho, London W1F 0BT
Earlier this year, Café Kitty opened in the Underbelly Boulevard space in Covent Garden. Unfortunately, despite good reviews, that didn't work out. But now another big hitter has come in to take its place. Artusi Soho is an Italian restaurant that comes from the same team as the well-reviewed Peckham original (which also runs Marcella in Deptford). Expect an Italian menu with a strong focus on fresh pasta, including tagliatelle with beef shin ragu. This isn't just for theatre-goers, so if you're looking for a new Italian restaurant in Soho, you should bear this in mind.
Opening: 1 November 2024
Vatavaran
Knightsbridge - 14-15 Beauchamp Place, London SW3 1NQ
This is the third restaurant in London from chef Rohit Ghai, who previously opened Kutir and Manthan. Here, he's taking over the space that was the short-lived Geode, and launching a restaurant that takes its influence from The Himalayas. Details of the menu have yet to be revealed, but expect an Indian menu and what they're calling "immersive dining".
Opening: 7 November 2024
Hotori
Holborn - 1 New Fetter Lane, London, EC4A 1AN
Hotori is a yakitori restaurant that's taking a nose-to-beak approach (similar in some ways to the first iteration of Humble Chicken). Taking free-range Fosse Meadows chickens as its starting point, you can expect sticks of everything from engawa (belly) and kashiwa (thigh) to tsukune (chicken meatball). It's not just about chicken though, as Japanese wagyu and miso black cod sticks are also planned, and they'll also have some interesting wine pairings on offer.
Opening: 18 November 2024
Silva
Mayfair - 26-28 Bruton Place, London W1J 6NG
The latest opening on this hidden foodie row of Mayfair (already home to The Guinea, The Cocochine and Bellamy's) is Silva. It's specialising in "seasonal" menus which is something we've been hearing a fair bit about recently, but there are some interesting names in the mix. Head Chef Slawomir Sawicki was previously at Eric Chavot and Galvin at La Chapelle while they've also brought in Peter Prescott, best known for partnering with Terence Conran on his last few restaurants like Boundary and Albion.
Opening: 21 November 2024
