It may be one of the quietest months of the year for new openings, but there are still some very interesting new restaurants coming to London in January.
Josephine
Chelsea - 315 Fulham Road, London SW10 9QH
After opening a restaurant in both Mayfair (Socca) and Belgravia (Brooklands) last year, Claude Bosi heads a little further west to Chelsea for his latest opening. This sees him teaming up with his wife Lucy for their take on a classic French Bouchon. Expect bistro-style food and a particular focus on Lyonnaise cuisine (which is where Bosi grew up). They'll also be serving wine by the metre, where you only pay for what you drink - less of a worry in Dry January, but we'll see what happens when February comes around...
Big Night
Hackney - 177 Morning Lane, London E9 6LH
Big Night takes over the Hackney space left by Nest (which has moved into somewhere bigger). Coming from Jack O'Connor and Joshua Ralph, who were last at Larry's and have an impressive CV of top London restaurants, it takes its inspiration from Japanese izakayas. The menu will be led by British seasonal produce and they say it'll be "perfect to be eaten with a beer in hand and friends at your side." Expect plenty of "food on sticks".
Opening: 11 January 2024
Juno
Notting Hill - 2-4 Farmer St, London W8 7SN
London's omakase craze continues, with another tiny restaurant devoted to "trusting the chef" on the menu. This is actually part of Notting Hill's Mexican/Japanese restaurant Los Mochis and is opening on the first floor with only six seats available per sitting. As with all omakase, it'll cost you, with a meal here coming in at £180. In that, you'll see them make use of bream from the South of Japan, olive flounder from South Korea and Kagoshima Wagyu A4, so you get an idea where your money is going.
Opening: 11 January 2024
Restaurant Story
Tower Bridge - 199 Tooley St, London SE1 2JX
A returning restaurant, this sees Tom Sellers' two-Michelin-starred restaurant reopening in a way that's surely a signal they're hoping to add a third star to the mix. This is no mere spruce-up as after almost a year's refurbishment and £2.5 mil spent on it, they've managed to add a whole new floor to the restaurant. The main event is their new chef's table which comes with its own terrace and it all arrives in time for the restaurant's 10th anniversary. Expect a much bigger wine list and new dishes on the menu, but we'd expect that much-imitated beef fat candle to keep popping up too.
Opening: 12 January 2024
Trejo's Tacos
Notting Hill - 299-301 Portobello Road, London W10 5TD
If a Hollywood celebrity is going to come to London to open a restaurant, these days it makes sense that Notting Hill is the place they head to first. This sees Hollywood hard man Danny Trejo open an outlet of his taco empire in London for the first time. The steak asada tacos with pepita pesto should be a priority to try (apparently a favourite of Anthony Bourdain) alongside the surf and turf burrito (with steak asada and spicy shrimp). London's taco scene is pretty competitive these days so it'll be interesting to see how this stacks up against the locals.
Opening: Late January
