My Manor, Richard Turner's local guide to Deptford

my manor - richard turner's guide to deptford

The founding chef behind Hawksmoor and Pitt Cue as well as the man who brought Meatopia to the UK, Richard Turner is also the Turner behind Turner & George butcher in Islington. He's now in charge of a brand new menu at Bodean's and has agreed, as a resident of Deptford, to share his favourite food and drink places in that area.

jin jiang deptfordJin Jiang

36 Deptford Broadway, London SE8 4PQ

The menu at Jin Jiang is biblical in size and authentically Chinese in its 'icky bit' offerings. I love icky bits and this restaurant proffers offal in abundance alongside the more familiar salt and pepper dishes, hot and sour soup, fish fragrant pork, Xinjiang-style cumin lamb, kung pao chicken, dry pot sichuan and a classic chow mein.

24 Evelyn St, London SE8 5DG

This is a five-minute walk from my house and consequently, I’m there once a week. The eponymous Phở and the Bánh mì are excellent but it’s the fish sauce chicken wings that steal the show here.

Arch 3, Deptford Railway Station, Deptford High St, London SE8 4NS

This coffee shop in the railway arches by Deptford Station is a cool retro chic cafe in a railway arch. Great coffee is a given with a bespoke espresso blend or single origin filters, roasted by Mission Works. Sandwiches, bread and cheese and various juices are also available in this little oasis complete with palms.

Deptford High Street

Down Deptford High Street are several fishmongers, often selling surprising fish, board stiff mackerel and occasionally beautiful turbots, my two favourite fish. Live crabs and shellfish too, as they’re all within a stones throw of each other I’d suggest checking them all out before choosing.

Lewisham College Car Park, Lewisham Way, London SE4 1UT

This market at the weekends is great for a bit of gastro-voyeurism. Great sandwiches, biscuits and cakes, pies, cheeses, charcuterie, condiments and preserves. In fact you name it, it’s here.
