My Manor, Karan Gokani's local guide to Hampstead

ALT

Karan Gokani of Hoppers is a hugely popular Sri Lankan and South Indian restaurateur and chef who has successfully launched three restaurants plus delivery kitchens across the capital. He has topped bestseller ‘cookbook’ lists and recently launched his #indian101 series on Instagram. Here he shares his top tips on where to eat and drink in Hampstead.

Sushi TokoroSushi Tokoro

2, Broadwell Parade, Broadhurst Gardens, London NW6 3BQ

This tiny, one-man hidden gem serves the freshest and best value sushi you can find in North London. Ikram, the owner and chef, is Sri Lankan but has trained with some of London's sushi masters. I've often tried to convince him to come and work with me at Hoppers, but thankfully he has refused and continues doing what he does best!

SarracinoSarracino

186 Broadhurst Gardens, London NW6 3AY

This is old-school neighbourhood Italian done exactly as it should be. Think white tablecloths, plastic flowers, and the comforting hum of local gossip from surrounding tables. I eat here at least once a fortnight - it’s delicious, welcoming, and priced just as a great neighbourhood spot should be.

New ColabaNew Colaba

279 W End Ln, London NW6 1QS

One of my favourite local Indian restaurants, this newly renovated Indian restaurant is run by two brothers from India, Nikhil and Sachin. It's everything I crave from back home in India without the central London fanfare and prices. You can find many of the north Indian classics on the menu, done authentically and served alongside authentic chaats, kebabs and snacks.

Nautilus fish and chipsNautilus

27-29 Fortune Green Rd, London NW6 1DU

I’ll go out on a limb and say this is the best fish and chips in London - no, scratch that, the best in the world. Yani and his family have been running this place for years, and it’s about so much more than just the food (which, by the way, is outstanding). I come here with my young sons at least once a week, and every time, it feels like coming home. Nautilus defines neighbourhood hospitality, warmth and that third space that one often craves when revisiting a restaurant time and time again. Pro tip: ask for your chips double-fried, the off-menu rock salmon which, when available, is truly stunning.

Ronis BagelsRonis Bagels

44 Rosslyn Hill, London NW3 1NH

When we’re not making our own bagels at home on the weekend, this is where we start our Saturday mornings. Watching fresh bagels being boiled and baked by Abu behind the counter is always a pleasure. If the lady behind the till is in a good mood (which isn’t always the case), ask her to make you a fresh-seeded bagel with salmon and cream cheese - it’s miles better than the pre-made ones. And don’t leave without a chocolate babka—it’s the perfect snack for later or a great gift if you’re seeing friends.
