Roam the west coast of India without having to leave London
If you're looking to escape to India this February (and frankly with this weather who isn’t?), then Masala Zone is making it easier than ever without having to take a long-haul flight. As you might know, they showcase proper Indian food of the many regions of India. This has inspired them to take you on a Culinary Voyage of the entire West Coast of India.
From now to 27 April, the menu of London’s favourite purveyor of ‘proper Indian food’, is being transformed into a tribute to the vibrant and diverse food of these coastal regions across their restaurants.
Over the course of ten weeks, Masala Zone restaurants will be offering a range of coastal dishes highlighting the unique flavours of six key gastronomic powerhouse coastal regions, from the Gujarat coast up north all the way down to Kerala in the south. The use of coconut in many forms, fresh from the coconut palm trees which grow down the coast is a defining feature of the most of dishes.
Think fresh seafood, punchy vegetarian dishes, spicy curries, and indulgent biryanis, cooked by the restaurant's skilled chefs. Each dish tells a story, tracing centuries of trade, migration and culinary evolution. This voyage demonstrates Masala Zone restaurants uniqueness in showcasing proper Indian food of the many regions of India.
The journey through six coastal regions – what’s on the menu?
Starting in Gujarat, the temple-laden state is a haven for vegetarian ingenuity. Mandvi Dabeli is a highlight – a mix of soft ladi pav bread, mashed potatoes, and a special masala, a moreish street food snack that’s all the rage. There’s also Yam Tikki Chaat, crisped purple yam with spiced peas which delivers a surprising depth of flavour.
Mumbai is next, where the city’s food culture is as diverse as its people and as layered as its history. Here you'll find Vada Pao Sliders (two lightly spiced vegetable patties in a home-baked caramelised onion pao bread), the bold and aromatic Maratha Bhajia Curry, the indulgent Khoja Chicken Biryani, steeped in Bohra heritage and Chowpatty Beach Pani Puri Pops.

From the Konkan Coast between Bombay and Goa, the menu brings in options such as Konkani Veg Khatkhate Curry, a Saraswat community speciality. There’s also Kolhapuri Paneer, Konkan Green Veg Biryani, and Konkan Grilled Seabream with Fisherman’s Spices, fragrant, unapologetically bold and packed with the tastes of the coast.
Then there’s Goa – with its Indo-Portuguese influenced cuisine defined by maritime spice routes. You’ll find dishes like Goan Spiced Crab Cake with vindaloo mayo, punchy Portuguese and Indian influenced Chorizo Balchao Chilli Fry, the classic Seabream Goa Fish Curry, and a local favourite: Goa Green Herb Chicken Cafreal.

Over on the Malabar Coast, traders through the centuries who landed on the beautiful shores created an incredible diversity of sub-cuisines. Expect Karwari Crispy Fried Prawns, Seabass Tawa Fry, Coondapur Chunky Chips tossed in Shetty Masala, and a rich Malabari Moplah Lamb Biryani. For something different, try the Udupi Masala Bullet Idlis, steamed idlis tossed with spicy gunpowder seeds.

Finally, the Kerala-inspired dishes will transport you straight to the south western tip of India, with magnificent sea coasts, lush lagoonsfertile paddy fields and a cuisine to match. Comforting Cochin Lamb Curry with roasted coconut, vibrant Alleppey Prawn Curry with raw mango, and iconic Malabar Moplah Lamb Biryani are all a true celebration of the region’s rich culinary history.
