When described as a nation that up until 10 years ago ate nothing more tasty than boiled mutton and porridge by the New York Times this week, Londoners quite rightly got a bit miffed. But, it turns out, we do still like a bit of mutton. Mind you, we reckon the dishes here are a world apart from what the NYT's writer had in mind.
Calum Franklin's wonderous pie menu includes a curried mutton pie made with slow cooked shoulder and mango salsa for £20.
With two branches (Battersea and Islington) you can head to either for the rotisserie 24 hour marinated mutton shoulder for £12.
Head to Soho for this mutton fry of slow-cooked diced mutton in Andhra Masala for £9.
Sadly the mutton rolls are no longer on the menu at Neil Rankin's City restaurant, but instead you can order the whole smoked mutton at £12 per 100g
At Hoppers' two London restaurants, the mutton roll starters are always super popular and just a fiver.
They're always changing their menus at Lyles, but right now you can get mutton with potatoes and mustard.
The Mutton Keema Sloppy Joe at Jikoni adds in Pickled Onion, Mint & Mango Chutney in toasted brioch and serves it up with fried padrons for £12.50.
