Moro & Morito
34-36 Exmouth Market and 32 Exmouth Market, London EC1R 4QE
On the borders of Islington and Farringdon, a stone’s throw from Sadler's Wells, is Exmouth Market. I cut my teeth at Moro, and remain a close friend of Sam and Sam – their restaurants are, to my mind, the best London has to offer – delicious, wholesome, honest and inspiring.
Pophams & Devotion Coffee
19 Prebend St, London N1 8PF and 2 Cross St, London N1 2BL
I am very fortunate both of these lie on the school run – Pophams for the best viennoiserie I have ever had (I stick to their two classics – pain au chocolat and the maple bacon Danish), and both for exceptional coffee.
Islington Farmer’s Market
Chapel Market, London N1 9PZ
Every Sunday from 10am this little farmers market – which was the first in London – rocks. I tend to pick up poultry, game (in season), cheeses, fruit & veg, and after a visit or two you quickly learn which stalls offer the best value to you. This is one of the rare places in London, where shopping becomes a pleasure.
Trullo
300-302 St Paul's Rd, London N1 2LH
I am lucky enough to live near one of the capital’s best Italian restaurants – there are just a very few where the cooking is wonderful, and Trullo is one of them. Actually I have two – little Saponara (next to Popham’s), makes a great pizza too.
Turner & George, Steve Hatt, Moxons, Neals Yard Dairy, Avoman and Newington Green Greengrocers
You get much better choice and better value in a really well-run independent, and I am very lucky to be surrounded by them. Turner & George for choice meats; Steve Hatt & Moxons for awesome fish, Neals Yard for cheese, dairy and bread and Avoman and Newington Green for local and continental fruit & veg.
