The best vegan and vegetarian food for delivery in London

London's recent boom in plant-based restaurants has taken a little longer to filter into the delivery scene - but there are notable exceptions. Here's our pick of some of the best delivery options for anyone after vegan or vegetarian food during the lockdown. 

 

Absurd VirdAbsurd Vird

Where: Soho and Spitalfields

The vegan arm of Absurd Bird serves up chik’n versions of its classics - with tenders, burgers, waffles and more on the menu, teamed with vegan sriracha mayo. They also do a nice line in vegan baos, and sides like vegan onion rings and dry rub garlic fries.

AthenianAthenian Plant-based

Where: White City, Victoria, Battersea, Canary Wharf

This new-launched fully plant-based spin-off from the Greek restaurant chain serves up its usual Aegean favourites but without the meat. On the menu you'll find vegan gyros, tomato croquettes souvlaki, courgette fritters and sides like oregano and seet potato fries.

Biff'sBiff's

Where: Dalston

There are two ways of getting your Biff’s Jack Shack fix during lockdown - either use Deliveroo if you’re near their Dalston spot, or download the Hop Drop app from BrewDog and they’ll deliver within a five-mile radius. So whether you're after a Samuel Hell Jackson burger with chipotle slaw, maple-chipotle hot sauce, jalapeños and American cheeze or Bacunator Loaded Fries featuring Biff's 'bacun' jam, garlic mayo and bacun bits they should have it to-go.

Founder Camilla Fayed (yes, her dad used to own Harrods) has made a killing serving her popular plant-based food and excellent coffee to the folks of Notting Hill. The delivery runs on weekdays from lunch till 7pm and features sourdough artichoke pizzettes, roasted tofu pad thai as well as earth bowls and desserts. There’s also organic beer and wine on offer too.

Halo BurgerHalo

Where: Shoreditch and Brixton

Halo’s key focus is around the Beyond Burger - the plant-based patty made from pea protein that does its level best to taste as close to a fresh beef burger as possible. They also have a crispy katsu burger that they created alongside Nanban’s Tim Anderson and their pink salt fries are very good indeed.

Where: Shoreditch and Brixton

The doyenne of veggie food in London has been around since the Eighties (their first cafe in Soho took over a former sex club). Now to be found in less racy premises in Camden, King’s Cross and Dalston, their food is still exciting vegetarians. They’re serving up a truncated menu for their lockdown offering. Highlights include Sri Lankan Sweet Potato Curry, Char Sui tofu bowl and chocolate pistachio brownies for dessert.

Peckham's popular restaurant and shop has all manner of treats available for local delivery - from wraps with a portion of Persepolitan spiced chips and a little salad bowl through to a dinner date for two. That comprises of meze starters with some flatbread, a hotpot bowl with some fragrant saffron rice, a few pastries and a pot of Persian ice cream. Everything is veggie but can be made vegan on request.

Walthamstow-based vegan curry house Spice Box is all about serving up great Indian food that just happens to be vegan. Chef Grace's red lentil tarka dhal picked up a prize for the best dhal in Britain a few years back and she's also sending out loaded bhaji, jackfruit jalfrezi, chana chaat and more alongside her own branded sauces like date and tamarind ketchup.

Where: Brick Lane

This Brick Lane based restaurant has created an ultra-niche in the Korean-Italian vegan fusion food it serves up. Kimchi is a key ingredient - find it on top of steamed rice, in a tofu pocket, with udon noodles and in lasagne. We’re intrigued by the sound of their Toppognocchi which is a combo of Korean rice sticks with gnocchi served up with tomato sauce and gochujang.

What the PittaWhat the Pitta

Where: Camden

If you're after a plant-based kebab, then What The Pitta should be on your list. They make their own flatbreads and then stuff them with non-GMO soya pieces marinated in a blend of their secret spices. Other delivery options include falafel wraps, a doner chipbox and they make their own vegan baklava.
