Sandos - they're just so pleasing to the eye aren't they? London, as you might imagine, has its fair share of these symmetrically-crafted sandwiches on offer. If you hate crusts, then come this way.
The Egg Sando at Café Kitsuné
Ground Floor, 19 Motcomb St, London SW1X 8LB
Dreamt up in Tokyo but with a distinct Parisian accent, this cafe inside Belgravia’s Pantechnicon building serves up exquisitely created pastries. Their sandos are equally beautiful - there’s both a chicken katsu and egg version on offer, with the egg just tipping the balance.
The Croque Sando at Le Petit Beef Bar
27 Cale Street, London SW3 3QP
One of the signature dishes at this Chelsea spot devoted to all things beefy is only available at dinner time. The sando of dry-aged beef ribeye prosciutto and mozzarella is assembled in a tight square leaving just enough space for a load of the buttery, truffly Beef Bar sauce to be poured in.
The Wagyu Sando at Taka
109 Marylebone High Street, London W1U 4RX
Is £50+ too much for a sandwich? That’s between you and your bank balance. What isn’t in dispute is the quality of this luxury beef sando made with Sakura Wagyu beef produced in Kagoshima Prefecture. The toasted bread is then slicked with miso sauce and English mustard for an additional kick.
The Hainanese Sando at Mambow
Stall 11, Market, 133a Rye Ln, London SE15 4BQ
This lunchtime-only treat at chef Abby Lee’s Peckham kitchen is worth the trip to SE15 alone. Toad Bakery bread encases poached chicken in a ginger and spring onion oil. Then you get the addition of chicken fat chilli sauce, kewpie mayo, crispy onions and lettuce for one of London’s finest sandos.
ALL the sandos at Panadera
83 Kentish Town Rd, London NW1 8NY
Sandos are one of the specialities of the Filipino bakery in Kentish Town and they do them very, very well. There’s a chicken and mushroom version and an egg sando that shows just what can be achieved with the simplest of ingredients. But our preference is for their corned beef version which sees the corned beef brined for over a day before being shredded and then turned into a croquette with bechamel sauce.
The katsu sandos at Tanakatsu
10 Wakley St, London EC1V 7LT
As you might expect from anywhere specialising in katsu, Tanakatsu does a very nice line in katsu sandos. They’re only available at lunchtimes at this neighbourhood Angel restaurant and there’s a pork or chicken option served with katsu sauce and mixed salad.
The sea bream tempura sando at Junsei
132 Seymour Pl, London W1H 1NS
A relatively recent introduction to the menu at this yakitori restaurant in Marylebone, this rather delicate but delicious sando features sea bream in a tempura batter with watercress on shokupan bread, served with kimizu sauce.
Sando bar snacks at The Aubrey
66 Knightsbridge, London SW1X 7LA
You've got to love any bar food menu that includes three sandos on it, so the bar at The Aubrey already has a place in our hearts. There's a choice of chicken katsu and A4 Kagoshima wagyu sandos with the option to level up the latter with the addition of caviar and gold leaf. The newest sando on the block is on the restaurant's brunch menu - a prawn sando with tonkatsu and tartare sauce.
