Best beef (and non-beef) Wellingtons in London restaurants

Jump to: Beef  |  Non-beef

A classic British dish, there's something innately comforting about a great Beef Wellington. We've rounded up some of the best in London - plus a few Wellingtons that forgo the beef for something a little bit different.

Beef Wellingtons

The Savoy Grill

The Savoy Hotel, Strand, London WC2R 0EU

Gordon Ramsay has made Beef Wellingtons one of his signature dishes, so there's no surprise that it's a big thing at The Savoy Grill. Ramsay's version includes duxelles mushrooms and chicken mousse around the beef and if you can't make it to the restaurant, you can see how to make it yourself here

Holborn Dining Room

Holborn Dining Room

252 High Holborn, London WC1V 7EN

This is a restaurant best known for its pies, so it's not surprising that Holborn Dining Room makes one of the best Beef Wellingtons in town. It's only available once a week as part of Welly Wednesdays, with Nokx Majozi in charge of the recipe as Head Pie Maker.  Covered in a hand-cut lattice, the Wellington here looks amazing. They also make a vegetarian version that's available during the rest of the week, their vegan beetroot Wellington.

Bob Bob Ricard

Bob Bob Ricard

Soho, City of London

Both outposts of Bob Bob Ricard keep a classic Beef Wellington (available for two) on the menu, and theirs comes with truffle jus. It takes 45 minutes, so if you're planning on having one, give them plenty of notice. And while Champagne might not be the most obvious accompaniment to Beef Wellington, it would be rude not to press that button.

The Ritz Restaurant

The Ritz Restaurant

St James - 150 Piccadilly, London W1J 9BR

This glamorous hotel restaurant places great importance on attention to detail and silver service and that's definitely the case with the Beef Wellington at The Ritz. Made with Hen of the Wood and Périgord Truffle, it's part of their Arts De La Table service, which means it's all sliced and served by waiters at your table. If the presentation of your Wellington is as important as what's in it, this is the place to go.

45 Jermyn Street

St James - 45 Jermyn St., London SW1 6DN

If you're looking for more table service with your Wellington but The Ritz is a little out of the price range, 45 Jermyn Street (about five minutes away) is the place for you. Here, the Wellington is again served tableside, but as a little added extra, it's also flambeed. It comes with dauphinoise potatoes, green beans and peppercorn sauce.

Sussex

Sussex

Soho - 63-64 Frith St, London W1D 3JW

The Beef Wellington at Sussex has been such a success that they now have a menu devoted to it. The three-course set menu is available up to 6.30pm every day making it a notably popular pre-theatre option in Soho. The beef comes from their own farm in Sussex (of course) and look out for seasonal game versions too.

Claridge's - Lobster Wellington

Claridge's - Lobster Wellington

Going that little bit further than most for their Wellington, The Foyer and Reading Room at Claridge's encases a whole (shelled) lobster inside pastry, served along with sauce Américaine, green salad with avocado and truffle French fries.

Otto's - Lamb Wellington

Otto's - Lamb Wellington

Clerkenwell - 182 Gray’s Inn Road, London WC1X 8EW

The menu at Otto's restaurant is full of some of the richest dishes in town, led by their pressed duck. So they've also tried something a little different for their Wellington where the pinkest lamb is encased in pastry and duxelles mushrooms and served with haricots verts and rosemary jus.
