Bringing something new to Soho is TANGRA, a new late night Indo-Chinese restaurant on Frith Street. It takes its name from the Tangra neighbourhood of Kolkata, with the menu influenced by the Hakka Chinese community there.
Perhaps its most useful feature is that they're looking to cater for the late-night crowd, opening until 1.30am.
It all comes from Executive Chef Nikesh Sawant, who was most recently development chef at Mildreds, but whose career has taken him across India, Dubai and Australia. He's not only looking to Kolkata for inspiration but also further to Tibet and Nepal.
Primarily about sharing plates with a vegetarian slant, dishes will include their signature momos, wok-seared or served in tomato-lemongrass jhol, as well as the Sadeko chick’n kati roll, Frankie mogo fries, and honey chilli waffle aloo. There's also a wok section featuring Manchurian kofta, chilli paneer and sides that include Hakka noodles, schezwan fried rice and burnt garlic rice.
It's taking over what used to be the Soho Ceviche, and the restaurant seats about 60 people. As for the look of the place, that comes from Quadrant Design, the people who are also behind the design of Bar Kroketa, EL&N and more.
Nikesh Sawant himself says, "TANGRA is food with fire and attitude, shaped by our team’s roots, stories and creativity. We only work with the freshest produce and quality suppliers to make sure every bite explodes with freshness and flavour."
