Last year, Leroy restaurant in Shoreditch closed after seven years, with the restaurant having won and lost a Michelin star along the way. Now two Leroy alumni are taking over the space and relaunching it as a brand new restaurant, Duchy.
In charge of Duchy are Alex Grant and chef Simon Shand, who both first met at Leroy. The chef was part of their Michelin-starred team and has also just finished off a hugely popular residency at Topa in Provisions on Holloway Road (which we thought was excellent). While that residency was Basque-influenced, this new opening will take its cues from France and Italy. The Duchy of the title refers to the Duchy of Savoy, which stretches from south-east France to North West Italy. Shand's previous experience comes from Arbutus, Wild Honey and Frenchie, so he'll be drawing on his experience from those restaurants.
The menu, which uses British produce on French, Italian and Mediterranean fare, includes:
- Pork shoulder and smoked eel croquettes
- Brown crab arancini
- Anchovies with lardo on marjoram toast.
- Roasted pork neck with bagna cauda and courgette
- Dover sole with Grenobloise sauce
They'll also have larger sharing dishes like côte de boeuf or a red mullet with beurre blanc sauce. Meanwhile, desserts include latte fritto with vanilla gelato and cannoli with sweetened ricotta cheese.
Wines will also be taken from that Duchy of Savoy area and we're promised "world-class (not necessarily expensive)" wines on the menu. As for the cocktails, they'll feature regional negronis and spritzes and you can expect grappas on the list too. The room will remain largely similar to Leroy with a light refresh and a soundtrack of 200 albums which change regularly.
If you've been missing Leroy since it closed, this is definitely one to be excited about.
