Donabe on the South Bank is London's first Japanese clay pot rice restaurant

For the past seven years they've been serving up top class sushi on the South Bank. But now the owners of Hannah at County Hall are switching things up a bit, according to Code Hospitality newsletter. To start with they're moving the sushi operation to another hotel in East London. From the summer you'll find it in its new guise as Kokin at The Stratford Hotel (opens 1 May).

In its place, by the river, comes Donabe which is being billed as the city's first Japanese restaurant devoted to clay pot rice dishes. Of course, London has several Chinese clay pot rice restaurants, not least the say-it-like-it-is Pot & Rice in Chinatown. But this aims to be the first specifically Japanese operation.

We haven't seen a menu yet, but dishes we're told are on the launch menu include:

  • Sea bream donabe
  • Mullet clay pot rice
  • Smoked tuna and salmon roe donburi

"We hope to provide our guests with an authentic Donabe experience that’s rare to find in London," the owners say. Looks like this could be a new place worth checking out.
