We have to admit that when we received the information on The Orangery on 1 April we did initially put this down as an intricate April Fool. But it turns out that there really is a new restaurant just off Tottenham Court Road with London's biggest on-site hydroponic farm.
The Orangery has more than 35,000 plants growing inside it, which we're told is the equivalent yield to just over an acre of traditional farmland. As for the restaurant, it's an all-day affair open from breakfast through to dinner and focusing, as you might imagine, on British food.
Breakfasts sound proper with options including a Pork & farm sage breakfast muffin, gec brown sauce & Keen’s cheddar or a plate of Chapel & Swan smoked salmon & St. Ewe scrambled eggs with Rockstar levain bread.
At lunch and dinner the menu expands to dishes that include:
- Chunky minestrone, picked farm herbs and farm pesto with Bermondsey hard-pressed rarebit
- Leek & shallot tart, farm cavolo nero & crispy herb oil
- Hereford beef hanger steak, pickled shallot farm herb salad & green sauce
Drinks have a similar farm-fresh bent with everything from a tequila mule made with farm sage to a farm basil mock gimlet.
And if you're looking for somewhere really different to have a special meal out, the restaurant also has a chef's table inside the main farm downstairs.
