Somewhat out of the blue and with little fanfare, a German bakery and cafe has made its debut in London. Zeit für Brot (translated as "time for bread") has a number of bakeries across Germany. Over here, they've settled in Islington for their first UK opening, taking on a big corner site on the junction between Islington High Street and Pentonville Street in Angel.
A quick visit reveals it to be an extremely impressive-looking cafe/bakery. With its high ceiling and light-filled rooms all decked out in a light wood minimalist approach, it's quite the looker. As for what's on offer, there's a mix of bread, sandwiches, pastries and buns. At the time of writing, that includes chicken schnitzel sandwiches, raisin kringles, cardamom knopfs, banana bread and a whole range of schneckes (square cinnamon roll-like buns).
That's backed up by a notably large range of breads running from simple baguettes to a "little hausebrot". And finally, there are porridges to have in or to-go
Everything's baked on-site (there's a large bakery at the back encased in glass) and it already looks like it's going to be very popular from our visit. We wouldn't be at all surprised to see more of these appearing in London soon.
