Kensington's restaurant scene is on fire right now and nowhere is that more obvious than on Kensington Church Street. Hot on the heels of Krokodilos and Passyunk Avenue opening their doors comes a new Japanese spot Konjiki.
It's a family-run affair - they also have two sushi restaurants down on the south coast - with two brothers taking on the new venture from their parents who have been chefs for the past 40 years.
At this, their first restaurant in London, they say they're covering classic Japanese food through more of a modern lens. "Konjiki marks the next chapter in our journey, where we take our craft to new heights, maximising the artistry of traditional Japanese techniques while embracing modern innovation to redefine dining excellence."
If you're wondering what that means in practice, it's that you'll see traditional sushi and sashimi alongside newer elements like aburi cheese nigiri, where the fish is lightly seared before being topped with their signature sauce. Starters include hirata buns and sushi tacos and there's a range of larger donburi dishes for mains along with a Japanese fried rice dish, Chahan, which is topped with umami crumblings and cured egg shavings.
The drinks list features Japanese beer in draft and bottle, along with a short list of sake and Japanese sparkling wines.
Our Kensington spy tells us the place has been packed since it opened, so this should be worth checking out if you're in the area.
