The team behind highly-rated Islington pub The Baring, are heading south of the river for their second opening, The Kerfield Arms in Camberwell.
Taking over what was The Crooked Well, which closed at the end of last year, it sounds like they'll be taking a lot of what worked very well at the Baring (it was the highest new entry in the Top 50 Gastropubs list last year) and bringing it to Camberwell, including the chef. The team behind it all, Adam Symonds and chef Rob Tecwyn, have brought current Baring chef Jay Styler into their partnership and he'll now be the head chef at The Kerfield Arms. So if you liked what they were doing at The Baring (and it was indeed very good), then this is all sounding very promising for Camberwell.
As for the food, they bill it as "simple yet considered cooking, promoting humble ingredients and seasonal produce" and all that will be showcased in a brand new menu that includes:
- Cuttlefish & lardo shish, pul biber chilli
- Fried pig’s head, smoked eel & warm tartare sauce
- Yorkshire hogget, violet artichokes, bagna cauda & pine nuts
- Grilled monkfish, hand rolled fregola & shrimp bisque
- Ricotta & nettle dumplings, broad beans & wild garlic buttermilk
- Gariguette strawberry & chamomile custard doughnut
They'll also have a midweek lunch offer, which is a main course for £12, or £15 with a pint or a glass of wine. And there will, of course, be a Sunday lunch, featuring Ibérico pork belly, grilled Longhorn rump and charcoal-grilled Vendée chicken.
On the drinks side, the beers on offer will be from local breweries with Lost & Grounded making the pub's house lager. As for the wine, that'll mainly be natural and from small producers with a focus on old-world wine. On this side, they say they're aiming to be "clean and approachable, rather than being super funky". They'll also have classic cocktails, with a pina colada making the list.
As for the location, outside seating is planned (as it was at the Crooked Well) and there is a private space upstairs.
We're fairly local to The Baring ourselves and it's an excellent pub - so we think Camberwell residents will be very happy with this opening.
