We've been banging on about the impending arrival of The Knave of Clubs from chef Patrick Powell, James Dye, and Benjy Leibowitz, for a few weeks now. But while you might have remembered that there was going to be a restaurant in the space above that pub, it turns out to be a million miles away from the standard pub dining room.
With its own entrance, One Club Row is an entirely separate beast from the pub below. And while it might be in the heart of Shoreditch, the trio behind it are hoping to bring much more of an NYC vibe to this part of town. Key to that is the ten years that Benjy spent working in New York. He'll be the one greeting guests and working the room here. They're setting out their stall as a place for long lunches (but definitely not in the same way as The Yellow Bittern). Here it's going to be about rounds of oysters, classic martinis and music from the house pianist.
As for the food, this is where Culinary Director Patrick Powell comes in. His menu starts out with small snacks like pickled jalapeno gougères or lobster and country ham croquettes before moving onto larger dishes that include:
- Fresh tuna crudo with tomato, tonnato sauce, and pickled celery
- One Club Row burger au poivre
- Bone-in ribeye with chipotle hollandaise
- Dutch baby pancakes baked to order
The restaurant will have space for 45 diners which can be booked, along with 10 spaces up at the bar which are for walk-ins. On the top floor, there will now be a series of private event spaces and private dining rooms.
It all sounds like the kind of glamorous fun place that this part of town is crying out for. Count us in.
