Just over two years after the glitzy opening of Björn Frantzén's much-vaunted restaurant at Harrods, the Swedish chef has very quietly closed the doors on that partnership. The announcement was made on Boxing Day on Studio Frantzén's Instagram feed, so understandably most of us missed it. Kudos then to restaurant guide Hardens for picking up on it.
On the Instagram post in question, the closure was announced at the same time as a prospective new opening. "We are in the process of closing our Harrods location and relocating to a new venue, with the grand opening scheduled for the summer of 2025."
There's no word yet on where that new London restaurant might be, but we'll hazard a guess that wherever it is, it'll be a venue more suited to the live fire cooking that Frantzen became so well known for. What's probably certain is that it'll have a smaller budget opening than Frantzén did at Harrods; we're mesmerised by the story in Hardens that asserts that 52 private jets were used to fly folk in for it.
As for what's replacing it, the two-floored restaurant will now be The Grill on Fifth, a much larger version of The Grill that's currently down in the Dining Hall on the ground floor. Pictured above, you can expect a range of steaks from Britain, America, Japan and Australia. If you're not good at making choices but you have money to spend, there's going to be a Harrods Steakhouse Taster board with all three cuts on there.
- ‘Faux Meat Fruit’ porcini mushroom, truffle & miso parfait, chargrilled sourdough and mandarin jelly
- Wagyu smashed cheeseburger
- Slow-cooked Asian short rib with kimchi slaw
We're also into the idea of the bone marrow oysters and 18-hour braised short rib croquettes with gochujang mayo.
Studio Frantzen only closed last week with the Grill replacing it this week, so don't expect any big design changes. It will, of course, still have that fantastic rooftop space which we expect to be as popular as ever.
