A Hot Dinners exclusive
If there's one thing that 2024 has taught us, it's that the London pub scene is very much still alive and kicking. We started the year strong with crowds thronging the newly opened Devonshire and since then we've had a slew of places serving up interesting offerings in the city's old boozers from new Irish pubs to more wine-led offerings. Now as one year ends and another looms, we have the opening of The Prince Arthur in Belgravia to look forward to.
Starting with the pub, or what they're referring to as The Pub Below, that'll be a luxe interpretation of the modern tavern, with their own brand caviar, created in partnership with The London Caviar Company, and a fresh seafood counter featuring everything from baby eels and sea urchins to Carabineros and premium cuts. You can pick your seafood to enjoy in the pub, or to take home with you.
As is now the rule in London pubs, the Guinness game has to be on point and they say they've installed the same tap system you'd find in Ireland to ensure that perfect pint every time. They're also going to be serving up Jeremy Clarkson's Hawkstone beer range. As for wine, they boast that the pub will have "one of the best-stocked wine collections in London".
The Restaurant Upstairs is where things get really interesting. That's going to be a Basque affair run by Basque-born chef Adam Iglesias. He's worked everywhere from the Michelin-starred Alameda in San Sebastián, to BRAT, Barrafina, and Sessions Arts Club here in London. At The Prince Arthur he says he's committed to showcasing the finest British produce through Basque-inspired dishes, cooked over a state-of-the-art grill.
On that grill he'll be cooking Iberico and Galician beef and specialty pork dishes along with a feast of sustainably-sourced seafood, bringing the best of Spain’s coastlines to London. Also on the menu, you'll find Txangurro crab with turbot dripping potatoes, monkfish with clams & lobster bisque and lamb sweetbreads with trotter sauce. There will, of course be a Basque cheesecake.
This is definitely sounding like a pub to watch.
