Earlier this year, there was the surprising news that Manchester-based chef Brad Carter had decided to pull out of the launch of the much-hyped Undercroft restaurant that was to be housed in the St George's Church crypt in Mayfair. After the chef's announcement, things went very quiet on the project. But now it's back on track in a pretty surprising way.
It turns out that celebrity chef Aldo Zilli will be the man taking over the kitchen. Given the project originally showcased Carter as being the hot new chef leading this space, it's quite the pivot. Zilli may be more widely known for his eponymous restaurants (and many TV appearances), but this is the first time the chef himself has headed up an actual restaurant project in 20 years. As you'd expect, the menu now takes an Italian influence, with dishes promised including whole lobster tagliolini, monkfish porchetta and veal escalope saltimbocca. Zillo will also be running the chef's table.
At least this means we'll finally get a chance to see the new space, which should look very impressive. Undercroft is still run by music publisher Martin Priestnall and Michael Kill with live music being a big part of the experience and they've even managed to get a grand piano down there. It's not 100% clear, but we think you'll be able to pop down for a drink, so it'll definitely be worth heading in to see what they've done with the place.
