It's survived numerous scandals and been one of the cornerstones of Soho's louche late-night scene since it first opened in the eighties, but now The Groucho is facing its toughest trial yet. Members were stunned yesterday to find the club doors locked and a notice on the outside stating that the Metropolitan Police had issued a summary review of its licence after "the premises have failed to uphold the prevention of crime and disorder licensing objective". A later clarification stated that the private members club "had been the scene of a recent serious criminal offence."
A letter then issued by the club to its members said they'd taken the decision "to temporarily close the club. We have received an application to review our licence which we take very seriously".
The closure, albeit currently temporary, is a huge blow to its newish owners Artfarm who bought it two years ago, and also own the Mount Street Restaurant and The Audley in Mayfair. It's particularly bad news coming in the extremely lucrative period running up to Christmas. We'll bring you more news on this as we get it.
