The Milanese don't mess around when it comes to food, so when you hear that the best sandwich shop in Milan is coming to London it's time to get excited. De Santis has been serving up its legendary toasted paninis to the folks of Milan since the Sixties - the original restaurant is lined with the photos of famous Italians who've dined there.
In London, their flagship base is going to be in the church crypt of Mercato Metropolitano in Mayfair. They'll be serving up a mixture of sandwiches and salads alongside a selection of meat and cheese boards. And there are a lot of combinations to choose from.
To give you an idea of what to expect, here are a few options we know will be on the London menu.
- Cesare - Bresaola, mozzarella, artichokes and olive paté
- Bologna - Mortadella, PDO Gorgonzola and pepper jam
- Angel - Cantabrian anchovies, stracciatella, green tomatoes and lemon
- Ronny (named after Ronaldo) - PDO Parma ham, melted Brie, mozzarella and truffle cream.
They will also have a sandwich that's exclusive to the city. The ‘London’ panini which is filled with roast beef, cheddar, pickles, Tropea red onion, tomato, mayonnaise and mustard.
De Santis are hoping their London space will also be a good spot to go to for aperitivi, with a wide offering of Italian spirits and cocktails including a Fusetti Spritz, a classic Negroni and lots of Italian wine and beer.
