Well, we've been waiting for this news. It's been almost a year since Marcus Wareing's restaurant at The Berkeley had its last service. Now the Knightsbridge hotel has finally announced what's going to take its place. They're bringing in restaurateurs Ugo and Antoine Lecorché to open a London branch of the brothers' Southern French restaurant La Môme.
If, like us, you're not all that familiar with the restaurants in Cannes and Monaco, they're known for serving up a range of Mediterranean dishes in a glamorous setting. In Cannes, they're a draw for the A-listers that throng to the film festival, so presumably The Berkeley are hoping that their own version will be a similar celeb hangout.
Food-wise, we haven't seen the London restaurant's menu but it will apparently serve up many of the Cannes and Monaco signature classics. Looking at their menus they include options like a lobster roll to share, huge crudo platters, rack of lamb with pine nuts and they go big on the fish of the day.
It all sounds very elegant; we're told to expect walls lined with Slim Aarons’ photographs of sixties Riviera life. The new restaurant will also have a 10-seater bar and enjoy its own newly-created terrace. Even table changing will be a spot of theatre as, we're told, "waiters will carry freshly laid [tabletops] above their heads through the restaurant to replace a previous sitting."
"We are trying to bring to The Berkeley an experience that is about all the senses," says Antoine. not only about the food, but about the welcome, the service, the music, the energy, where something interesting is happening every day." Glamorous and fun - sounds like something London would be up for.
