Why The Yellow Bittern is a restaurant you need to know about

the yellow bittern caledonian road

In a London restaurant scene of robot chefs and the like, there's something fabulously analogue about the arrival of The Yellow Bittern restaurant on Caledonian Road. This tiny space will be an office for the art, fashion and food-focused Luncheon magazine, a bookshop and also a restaurant that's only open for lunch and will only take cash.

In the kitchen will be chef Hugh Corcoran whose food some of you might have tried when he did a much talked-about residency at Italo in Vauxhall last year. Hugh's originally from Belfast but has spent most of the last ten years working in the Basque Country and France where he's headed up the kitchens at Paris restaurants Delicatessen Place and Pères Pop.

We don't know anything about what's on the menu, but we're told, "The food will be hardy and the wine will be plentiful. Boozy lunches are very much encouraged." As Hugh explains, "It’s not a fantastic business plan - luncheons, wines and obscure books - but if we can live off it, ply our trade and continue doing what we love that’s all we ask."

It's a pretty small place with room for just 17 diners so there will be two sittings at 12pm and 2pm.
