Very under the radar, the team who brought us The Pelican and The Hero have just opened a brand new restaurant in Notting Hill. Canteen is an Italian restaurant that's taken over the same space where they held a pop-up last summer on Portobello Road.
A quick look at the launch menu shows that it's Italian in focus with a menu of pasta and larger dishes that will change daily. In the kitchen are two ex-River Cafe chefs, Jessica Filbey and Harry Hills. Is the name itself a nod to how The River Cafe started out life as a work canteen? Maybe.
Dishes we've seen so far include:
- Courgette ravioli with nasturtium
- Girolle risotto
- Beef shin ragu with polenta and gremolata
- Morello cherry frangipane tart with creme fraiche
That's all we know at the moment. It's walk-ins only so we'd suggest going as soon as you can if you want to get a chance of a seat there.
