One of London's oldest dining rooms is about to reopen after a major makeover, and with a very well-known London chef to boot.
The Georgian restaurant in Harrods has been welcoming guests for afternoon tea since it first opened way back in 1911. Since then it's played host to royalty and celebrities and had a number of refreshes over the years from the addition of Art Deco skylights in the 1920s to the most recent makeover a decade ago.
Now, the Knightsbridge store has brought in the big guns for its latest iteration. First, let's talk about the chef. You'll remember pie and pastry god Calum Franklin from his long stint in the kitchens at Holborn Dining Room. After leaving there he also opened the Public House restaurant in Paris. Now he's returning to London to oversee the evening menu at The Georgian.
That menu is going to take as its inspiration the 120 years of Harrods history since its opening. So there'll be a 1909 - Harrods Diamond Jubilee Consommé, Pâté en croûte 1960 with Cumberland sauce along with a serious pie offering including a Georgian Pie Experience for sharing and Calum's always-amazing Beef Wellington.
If you're here during the day shopping, then The Georgian will definitely be the place to hit for afternoon tea. They're promising the ministrations of tea sommeliers making custom blends and a seasonally changing menu, from the store's Executive Pastry Chef Markus Bohr, will feature options like:
- English cucumber, cream cheese, mint and pink pepper on white pain di mie
- Confit duck sandwich with orange marmalade on tomato bread
- Pistachio, pear and cinnamon sable Bréton
As for the room, that's being redesigned by the David Collins Studio who also did the Harrods Dining Hall most recently. The restaurant is huge by department store standards, with room for 164 diners. We're promised something of an Art Deco palace with 25 chandeliers, a grand piano and a handy outdoor terrace. It all sounds rather special.
