Turo Turo is going permanent with its Filipino barbecue food with a restaurant in Tooting

Most recently Turo Turo has been running as a popular food residency at Holborn pub The Queen's Head. But everything's about to change this autumn with the opening of a first restaurant, in Tooting. It's taken over the old Good Neighbour site on Tooting High Street where it'll be opening a Filipino Barbecue and Grill.

The man behind is chef Rex De Guzman who used to work for Gordon Ramsay at Maze in Mayfair before leaving to start up Turo Turo as a street food stall. You may have also seen him on TV in The Great Cookbook Challenge with Jamie Oliver where he made it through to the finals.

If the menu at the restaurant follows what he's been serving up at the residency you can expect a mix of small plates, sandwiches, rice bowls and coconut-braised dishes. That includes:

  • Four-hour braised pork tocino rice bowl
  • Beef longganisa sandwich - made with a Filipino sweet and spiced beef sausage and topped with yoghurt and sriracha
  • Prawn ginataan - Prawns with turmeric spiced coconut sauce with sweet potato, green beans and roasted cherry tomatoes
  • Royal bibingka dessert - a sweet rice cake with melted cheddar cheese and a scoop of Vanilla ice cream

It looks like Rex is planning a crowdfunding campaign to get the restaurant up and running. We'll update this story when we know more.
