We'd been hearing talk behind the scenes for a few days that not all was well with the opening of Undercroft. It was due to be top Birmingham chef Brad Carter's London debut but now he's announced that he's stepping back from the project.
According to Restaurant Magazine, the chef issued a statement about his departure, saying "Sadly my London debut is on hold. As of today, I will no longer be part of the Undercroft. I was genuinely very excited about this project, having first seen the space in 2022. We built an incredible team of people and suppliers to which we are very grateful for the support.”
The restaurant had recently its launch date moved back at rather short notice and until now there had been little talk from Carter himself about the opening, who's been over in Spain. Exactly what happens with the space remains to be seen. We're no longer sure if the same investors are involved and we had already heard that a number of people had also left the project before this announcement. That said, we'd imagine a fair amount of work has been completed, so we'll have to see if another restaurant group sweeps in to take over what should be an impressive-looking space.
As for Carter, he says he's still committed to opening in London, so we'll have to see where he ends up next.
